Darling, You're Different

The greatest gift God ever gave me was something different. Different than I expected. Different than what I had known. Different than what I planned for. Different than what I saw other moms hold.

I had no idea what life with Addie might look like. The unexpected diagnosis of Down Syndrome sucked all the air out of the room that day. So many years later I have come to know a moment that felt like dying was actually the day my life truly began.

Perhaps some of your life’s greatest challenges are actually the starting point of your greatest miracle.

Every good gift bestowed, every perfect gift received comes to us from above, courtesy of the Father of lights. He is consistent. He won’t change His mind or play tricks in the shadows. James 1:17

Different taught me to stop comparing. Different opened my heart to love big. Different helped me see the heart of God. Different opened doors. Different catalyzed authenticity. Different helped me let go of “cant’s” and focus on “cans”. Different was for my good.

We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan. Romans 8:28

I haven’t always celebrated different. Unknown, unfamiliar, doubt often gripped my heart. In a world where everyone applauds what’s similiar or expects a certain “way” I feared her rejection. I wanted her to be approved of and accepted and feared this would not exist. I was wrong. Not because I have found that the world has dramatically changed. (Though most people have been genuinely kind.) But because it is not the acceptance or approval of another that validates our worth. It is not the “same” that make us great. It is in our unique design created by our savior that we change the world. Look at your best, not your worst. This will be the way your life will grow to a new level. You are differently abled than me. So be YOU. Stop thinking YOU needs to be me. Darling, you’re different.
