Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
In the story, Jesus persisted with the paralyzed man despite his excuses, and the man eventually experienced healing. The verse in John 5:8 (NIV) describes Jesus instructing the paralyzed man to “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” This verse is specific to the healing miracle at the pool of Bethesda.
Jesus does this in another passage of scripture we find in Mark 2:1-12 (NIV) when He heals a paralyzed man who was lowered through the roof by his friends. In this passage, Jesus forgives the man’s sins and then tells him to pick up his mat and walk, showing His authority not only over physical healing but also spiritual healing.
The broader theme of Jesus’ power to heal and transform lives is a recurring theme throughout the Gospels and the New Testament. He is making it clear to us the power He has to heal. Sometimes, breakthroughs require persistence and determination.
Reflect on areas where you’ve given up too easily on healing or transformation. Have you allowed excuses to hold you back from experiencing God’s best for your life?
Consider how you can apply persistence to your journey of faith and healing. What steps can you take to keep moving forward, even when faced with obstacles?
Pray for the strength and resilience to pursue healing with unwavering determination.
