How "Alone" Impacts Your Health

I did not do this alone.

I’m an independent woman. Fiercely independent. Some days that quality has saved my life. Other days it’s sabotaged it. And it relates to my journey of health and well being–I did not do this alone.

Relationships are critical to everything we do in life. We are created for one another. Hard wired for connection and belonging to people. God designed us with healthy attachment in mind.

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18
There was a time that I thought self-reliance, self-assurance, self-supported and self-motivated would get me where I wanted to go. And it did. Until it didn’t. The road to health does not require everyone, but it does require the right ones. Meaningful connection not only serves us on our road to health and well being, but it is essential in living a longer happier life. People that lack these fundamental human relationships of rich companionship and support are at a forty-five percent greater risk of dying earlier.

I did not do this alone.

My personal journey toward health in the essential areas of my life – spiritual, emotional, physical and financial began with a decision inside myself. But the road was not one I walked alone.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far–go TOGETHER.

Having like-minded and like-hearted people around you is a powerful motivator. You are most influenced by the people you hang out with at home, work and play. Whether you are aware of it or not our connections with people that come into our daily lives have a profound effect on our mood, our capacity and our overall health. Perhaps, like me–it is time to take personal responsibility for the people you are surrounding yourself with or perhaps stop going at it alone. If you want to create a healthy life, draw the right friends close and move away from the wrong ones. A right relationship is one who will help you on the journey, while the wrong one is someone who actively sucks the life out of you.

The decisions I’ve made as I have pursued health over the last eight years required moving away from the disfunction of a life siloed in the areas that I needed the most help. I reached out to a health coach to create better habits that would be sustainable in any season of my life. I reached out to a business coach to help me create wealth that’s led to a life of greater generosity and service. I reached out to a friend to pursue fitness for accountability, and I reached out to a counselor to sort through some of my unwanted emotions. I reached out to a woman of faith to pursue an even deeper walk with Christ.

I did not do this alone.
