Tests That Fix Our Faith

Hebrews 12:2 (GNT)

Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end. He did not give up because of the cross! On the contrary, because of the joy that was waiting for Him, He thought nothing of the disgrace of dying on the cross, and He is now seated at the right side of God’s throne.

The writer of Hebrews exhorts us to keep our eyes “fixed” on Jesus. And the central idea here is to “attach our attention solely” on the Author and Finisher of our faith. But something in me is intrigued by the other meaning of “fixed”: to be repaired, restored, renewed or mended.

In our every day journey of faith, we need to have our eyes both “fixed” and “FIXED.” To walk resolutely focused on Jesus, and wholly restored in His presence.

And few things command us to seek His presence and power more than trials. They sharpen our focus, they challenge us to set some things down, and pick others up. And trials also exercise a muscle that wouldn’t grow otherwise: perspective that sees to the other side of struggle. Jesus experienced history’s greatest struggle at the cross, but He saw through it to the joy waiting on the other side. He had an eternal perspective in His pain.

Trails can break us, or they can make us, which is why the writer of Hebrews says we need to fix something: our eyes. The distraction of disappointment, delay and disaster can take us off course if we let them. But a life fixed on Jesus is anchored, assured, repaired and reoriented on God’s eternal purposes.

Tests and trials are integral to your spiritual journey, equipping you to withstand life’s storms with unwavering faith. So fix your eyes on Jesus, knowing that He walks with you through every trial and uses them for His glory. Surrender to His refining process, trusting that He is molding you into a vessel of His grace and love.
