Three Things to rOCkTOBER

It’s October. But let’s be real. Life doesn’t always ROCK. I’m on a journey to deep desires and great dreams. I think I’ve learned more than I’ve done. I realized that I have been a performer and an achiever since around the third grade. That’s when I gave my first public speech at Lakeside Farms Elementary school. I was elected to the office of class representative. This marks the beginning of my leadership career through Highschool as Student Body President. Running and gunning, going and accomplishing is who I am. For those of you familiar with the Enneagram, I am a THREE. By definintion: performer, achiever. It’s who I am. Whether you are designed with a bent to go hard or not,  the desire to make a difference and create purpose with your life is in all of us. Societal pressures compound this message with added pressure to hussle. Be the best wife. Be the best mom. Keep a lovely house. Volunteer at local charities. Workout hard. Eat clean..always. Start a business. Climb your corporate ladder. Open your home. Throw lavish parties (pinterest can help). Never settle. AND if you do…for shame. You just broke a promise to yourself. I actually love to work hard and spin fast. I even enjoy checking the boxes on my list. But even I am exhausted just reading these expectations. Now listen, I’m NOT suggesting give up on your dreams. I’m considering quitting any of the above aspirations. I only suggest the path to these goals and big dreams is not linear. Life is not always up and to the right. Your life can’t be pouring down with rain of blessing all day every day. If that were true your crop would flood and nothing would ever grow.

But, don’t let what you cannot do keep you from what you can do.

I plan to rOCkTOBER!  My plan is just THREE THINGS. Taking on too much might shut you down to quit. I want you to start. But it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. The month will through curveballs. And you can’t always “pull yourself up by your bootstraps”. That’s not gospel. God does command action. But he backs it up with his resource. That’s why my first thing on the list for each day in October is:

1. JESUS.

I started my list with something I need. What might that be for you? I hope it’s Him.

Throughout scripture God says to “be strong”, “take courage.” He repeatedly tells us, “don’t be afraid”, “take heart!” He does instruct us to do our part, take a step, make a move in faith. But he never requires of us without backing it up how he can help.

Isaiah 41:10 :Do not fear, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed for I am your God. I will stengthen you and help you help you. I will uphold you with my righteous hand.”

Starting with Jesus enables me to keep saying “YES”. When I feel I am at the end of my rope. When the grief overwhelms me. When discouragement and doubt subtly creep in I hear the words from 1 Samael 14:6, “Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf.” I can go another day. I have the courage to face another fight. And I have no regrets. This one sentence of truth makes me want to keep saying “YES!”.

2. COFFEE.

Yes. That’s right. I’m committed to a daily ‘cup of joe’. Here’s why. I enjoy it. Pick something you love to do daily. Something easy. Something that brings joy. I don’t suggest something harmful or self sabotaging. Maybe a walk around the block or a few minutes sitting out in the cool fall air. It can be as simple as scrolling through a magazine or reading a chapter in a good book. Whatever warms your heart, do that every day.

3. The Gym.

I’m specific with location because this one is a stretch. I get my body moving almost daily. Often that looks like a walk in my neighborhood on local trails. I picked the gym because I need to go lift weights. This form of exercise promotes chemicals in the brain that improve your mood and make you more relaxed. I’m not committing for vanity sake. This isn’t about weight loss or even more muscular definition. It is physical, but it’s chemical. I need to keep my head right and I am go after that daily. What’s one thing that might challenge you? Pick something that might stretch your personal abilities and improve your mental and emotional health.

For October I am saying “YES”. YES to these three things that repeated over time will enable even more possibility in my life.
