Expectation Hangs Out with Disappointment

Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

I’ve heard it said: Expectation and Disappointment walk hand in hand.” Whoever coined the phrase had a point. There is a direct line of connection between the disappointments you and I experience, and the expectations that preceded them.

We make plans. We expect them to work out, or we wouldn’t make them in the first place. But the reality of our expectations dooms us to disappointment when they don’t come to fruition because we are not in full control of our life’s circumstances. In truth, most of our day-to-day reality is completely out of our control.

We don’t control the cars in the lanes next to us. We don’t control the economy or the HR Department. We don’t control the weather or doctor’s diagnoses. Yet, we “expect” everything to go according to our plan. It’s no wonder we wrestle with disappointment so often.

In moments of disappointment, God invites us to seek His perspective and align our hearts with HIS reality—HIS will. His plans are higher and better than ours, even when they lead us through unexpected trials. And unlike our expectations, so vulnerable to defeat, God’s expectations never fail to come to pass. His purpose always prevails.

In this lies the key to dismantling disappointment in our lives: expecting God’s purposes, focusing on HIS plan. His purpose prevails and His faithfulness endures forever.

Reflect on the tension between our expectations and God’s sovereign purpose. Consider how disappointment often arises when our plans diverge from God’s will. Just as Proverbs reminds us of the supremacy of God’s purpose, let us surrender our expectations to Him and trust His unfailing wisdom.
