Mark 10:14 (NIV)

“Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

The words of Jesus shed light on the significance of nurturing and guiding the next generation, and the beautiful responsibility parents carry.

In this moment, Jesus was teaching His disciples, as well as all of us, an invaluable lesson about the worth of parenting and the place of children in God’s kingdom. He beckoned the children to come close, emphasizing that they were not to be kept at arm’s length or regarded as insignificant. Instead, He cherished their presence and affirmed their importance in the grand scheme of His divine plan.

What can we learn from Jesus’ view of children and apply to our roles as parents or caretakers? Here are a few key insights:

  1. Unconditional Love: Jesus’ open arms reflect His unwavering love for children. He loves them, not for what they can do, achieve, or become, but simply for who they are. As parents, we are called to mirror this unconditional love, showing our children that they are cherished just as they are, no matter what.
  1. Teaching by Example: Jesus used this moment to teach His disciples and us about humility, faith, and the qualities of heart that make the kingdom of God accessible. Parents, too, have the opportunity to teach by example, demonstrating godly values and leading their children toward a deeper understanding of God’s love and grace.
  1. Encouragement and Inclusion: Jesus encouraged children to come to Him, reminding us of the importance of fostering an environment of acceptance and inclusion in our families. Children should feel welcomed, heard, and valued in their homes, just as they were by Jesus.
  2. Investing in the Future: By emphasizing the kingdom of God belonging to children, Jesus underscores the vital role they play in shaping the future of faith. As parents, we have the privilege and responsibility of nurturing the seeds of faith in our children, knowing that their faith can be a powerful force for good in the world.

The view Jesus had of children challenges us to see parenting not as a mundane duty but as a tremendous privilege. It reminds us that as parents, we have a sacred role in shaping the lives of our children and guiding them toward a deeper relationship with God.
