Recently I caught myself saying a small little statement that I once would have prided myself in. I was hanging up the phone with a friend when the last words out of my mouth were,

 

“Get ‘er done.”

 

I wanted to call back and apologize. Not because the words were offensive. Not because they were bad. Taking action is good. But sometimes the drive to succeed out of balance can make a person snap. It really doesn’t matter what you do for work. Whether you run a large company, or stay home full time to raise a family, the mantra ringing loud and strong through current culture is “MAKE IT HAPPEN!” Keep that nose to the grindstone and “get ‘er done.”

My God-given wiring leans hard into this way of thinking. It has enabled much good in my life. I believe the path to our God-given dreams is a road full of action. However, when we take the pace of the rat race, like it or not, we will eventually get run over. Sometimes what is lost on the journey to “greatness” is joy. And that is why I am sorry. Creating habits that cultivate true meaning in this life are not rooted in “get ‘er done.”

The root of abundant living is found in John 15:5,

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

I find encouragement for my soul in these words. For all the drivers and doers listening in, let the truth bring rest. Simply connect to Jesus. Draw close to Him. Engaging in personal relationship with Christ is the key to your success. For those who desire to do good works, but don’t think you have what it takes, be encouraged by the words of this passage. Connect to Jesus. Apart from Him, no one can do any good thing. He has what we all need. Ultimately, He is the one who will make it happen.

We live in a culture that idolizes success and demonizes failure. But in God’s economy the outcome isn’t the issue. Success isn’t winning or losing. It’s not one thousand followers or ten. It’s about the obeying and the becoming. It’s joining your life with His and the result is fruit. Fruit that will last. This is freedom. I can do my part, yet rest assured that God will do His.
