Friends at the Table: A Community of Growth

Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Once upon a summer a table was set for eight friends to gather, echoing the intimate tradition of “toes under the table” that families enjoy. We began with laughter, reminiscing about the past, and dreaming of the future. As we sat down to a hearty meal and shared a prayer, one of the friends described us as “kingdom women”—each one of us having something unique to give and receive. It was a beautiful affirmation of the bond we shared.

Over time, this group of friends—the “Supper Club”—has weathered many seasons of life together. We’ve faced change, endured pain, grieved losses, and celebrated victories. We’ve stood side-by-side through struggles and joys, always supporting one another. Our shared values have been the common thread that’s held us together.

But the Supper Club is not about uniformity; it’s about embracing our differences. We don’t all think alike, nor do we view every issue from the same perspective. And yet, this diversity is what enriches our interactions and facilitates growth. The diversity at our table creates opportunities for learning and development, mirroring the biblical principle of community found in Proverbs 27:17.

Just as iron sharpens iron, our friendships have sharpened us, making us better individuals and a stronger community. We have learned the importance of mentorship, leadership, and fellowship. As a community, we believe the best of each other and hope for better. We encourage one another, building confidence and promoting growth. Together, we live out a transformative truth: Change is a sign of growth.

In a world that often feels isolating, the Supper Club stands as a testament to the power of community. It reinforces the Biblical principle that no one is meant to walk this journey alone and that we all benefit from the sharpening influence of true friendships. As we gather around the table, we are reminded that community, like a good meal, nourishes the soul, enriches the spirit, and equips us for the journey ahead.
